GFW Day 3
Not going to lie, we’re just a little bit tired now, today has been massive and my feet are getting that way too – three twelve hour days in heels, HARDCORE. Sleep deprivation aside, it’s been uh-mazing, I actually don’t want to go home! Here’s what went on...
With an A-List fandom from Kim K to Iggy and an Insta following to be incredibly jel of, Jack Doheny is surely one of the coolest illustrators around. He's all about drawing powerful, fashionable women (currently trying to recruit him as our new BFF). Find out more about the guy behind the signature lashes...How did you get into illustration?I was inspired by other illustrators' success through using Instagram as their platform, so I decided to try it out. It was re-posts from the likes of Khloe and Kim Kardashian, Iggy Azalea and Jourdan Dunn that got me noticed. What did you study at uni?I studied art & design in college and my degree is in spatial and interior design, I was very confused it wasn't the right course for me, haha! What medium do you like to work with the most?More recently I use my IPad for my illustrations and I love it as I can layer and mix different textures for bold striking effects. By hand I love watercolour. If any celeb came to you and asked you to draw them, who would you want it to be?In terms of the celeb actually approaching me I would DIE for Beyonce. However in terms of illustration I'd love a challenge like Lady GaGa or Madonna as I'd never know what to expect and that would excite me!What is the most rewarding thing about your job?I absolutely love when I'm near the end of the illustration and it's that one stroke of the lash or pout of the lips and it's instantly recognisable to the client. Drawing is also the only time I truly get peace and is my escape from the world. What are some of the biggest challenges you've faced? The biggest challenge I have faced is getting to where I am today and choosing my career path. I knew I could draw but I didn't know how I was going to use my talent to get me to where I wanted to be.What's the inspo behind your signature lashes? Going into illustration I didn't intend on the lashes, it was when I was playing around with different ideas that I came up with the bold line as the lash. It was more of an experiment to see what happened and people began to love it and identify them with me. I think they help to set me apart, I like to call them the cockroach lash.Top tips on landing your dream job? This is actually a funny one for me to answer as I am still on the road to success myself and have goals I want to reach. However, what I would say is persistence and patience is everything. Once you have success keep producing and promoting yourself as nothing is guaranteed. Just do what you love and it will show, you will get noticed.
GFW Day 1
After months of planning, we finally hit London today for Graduate Fashion Week. Celebrating its 25th year, GFW is the UK’s most exciting platform for emerging talent and we are buzzing to be one of the show's official sponsors. It’s got a hella place in my heart, I showed my own robot themed graduate collection here TEN years ago this June (please don’t use this information against me and calculate my age). I’ll be here all week to give you an inside look and I promise to bring you the highs, lows and even the outtakes of the event. Here’s how my day played out...5.30am Alarm BellsI may be a London girl at heart but boohoo HQ is based in Manchester so it was an early morning powered by a serious amount of coffee and good vibes. Obviously terrified I was going to miss my alarm, unable to come out of Tom Hardy sponsored slumber, I spent most of the night wide awake considering everything that could go wrong the following day. 10 am Quick ChangeSO the expectation Vs reality of life in fashion is widely discussed, but really, if you think it’s all almond milk lattes and an endless stream of free sh*t, think again. Before heading to the Brick Lane venue, me and four work BFFs crammed into the one room that was ready for check in to do a quick change and refresh. Embarrassingly the size of my bag caused one of the girls to ask if I was moving back to London. I just like to be prepared people.
GFW Day 2
Back again following another crazy long but beautiful day at Graduate Fashion Week. Expecting things to be a little quieter after Sunday's first day rush, we couldn't have been more wrong, hours pass in a heartbeat at this event! Here's what went down...8am Suspect packagesThe show starts at 10am on the daily but me and two colleagues from the press team arrived early to give the stand a mini makeover. Carrying a mannequin, body under one arm, legs under the other, I enter flustered only to find fashion mogul Hilary Alexander stuffing bags with show programmes. Love her!10am Grand TourWe're taken around the event by one of the shows trustees to get an expert view of the talent and excitement on offer. Talking to the grad class of 2016, the ideas and energy gave me brand new goals. And, then I met Tilly the Boston Terrier, life made.12pm Special GuestThis year we teamed up with GFW to give the grads a chance to design a dress for our 10th birthday. Out of hundreds of entries, you lovely people voted Ella Maskrey as our winner. Her badass boho dress will be made and sold at boohoo later this year! Ella popped by the stand to talk inspo, summer plans and the scary world of adulting.
