Music Fix | Espa

By day I’m a singer-songwriter, by night I’m a documentary fiend

London-based Espa is pretty fierce; not only does she produce some soulful sounds, but she can speak Russian and dead lift 70kg. Yeah, we're not kidding!

We caught up with Espa ahead of the release of her new track 141 to find out what makes her more than just a girl...

What three emojis would you choose to describe yourself?

Prawn tempura, crystal ball & Santa Clause.

Who inspires you the most?

My late grandfather, who was the first musician in my family (there are now 15 pro musos amoung us), for being crazy enough to let me steal his first trombone at the age of 17 and end up touring the world with the likes of Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland and Tom Jones. What a hero!

What’s your fave feel good quote?

‘Be a badass with a good ass’

Espa wears our Olivia Denim Top and Cami Paisley Dress

What did you grow up listening to?

The artists who my dad and grandad were playing for, so that old school jazzy stuff. But I also had a healthy diet of the Spice Girls, Craig David and Nirvana.

How would you define your sound?

A patchwork quilt of my weird and wonderful influences, put through a filter of my crazy, vibrant life experiences so far, with a big splash of Prince, Madonna and J Dilla.

Best career moment so far?

Playing my first sold out headline show in London this March. It was the moment where everything made sense and I realised that all this time spent in the studio, creating my visuals and working on myself came together when I was on stage. That’s when I really feel at home, and of service to others at the same time…. Also that one time Craig David tweeted me!

What are you most proud of achieving?

Being the first female to get a First Class Honours degree from the Royal Academy of Music in jazz and composition… that was a proud moment. Although I missed the graduation 'cause I was in the studio! Whoops!

Most exciting plan for this year?

I'm very hyped to be doing my first round of festivals! And to be collaborating with my ultimate woman-crush, the incredible songwriter, Linda Perry. Whhhaaaaaattttddddd?!?!?!
