How-To: Be A Morning Person
There's two kinds of people in this world. Morning people, and people who are simply not. And if you're the latter, even opening your eyes can be the ultimate struggle. But life goes on. And if you're in need of tips to making mornings that little bit more glorious - you're in the right place. Let's rise and really shine...Get A Good Night's SleepOkay, so kind of an obvious one here but getting a good night's sleep will inevitably make you have more of a spring in your step come the AM. And I'm not just talking duration but quality too. Whether that's a blackout blind, good quality bedding, what position you sleep in and the room temperature. It's also about lighting candles, opening the windows and refraining from using technology too much at bedtime. It's like laying the foundations of a house - if you don't do it properly, the structure will just collapse, and your body works in the same mentality - treat it well.Find What Wake-Up Call Works For YouFor some, your body may wake up to the sun naturally rising (not as easy come winter). For others it's only alarms that will work. Some people set a calm tone to bring themselves out of their slumber whilst others choose a deliberately annoying tune so that they just have to switch (or hit) it off. A good call, literally, is to put your phone or alarm at the opposite side of the room to you so that you have no choice but to physically get up to turn it off. Jump In The ShowerHaving a refreshing shower is the quickest way to feel more alive and more on board with the whole morning malarkey.Put Some Music OnFan of music? This one's for you. Pop a playlist on whilst you get ready. It's 20-30 minutes of dedicated chill time, and makes the whole process a lot more fun. If you want to stay on the right side of your partner/flatmate and neighbours - keep the volume down low pre 9am obviously... Work OutWhether it's 20 minutes yoga or a 5k run outside to clear your head - you'll not only feel great physically but mentally it'll set you up for the rest of the day. It'll makes you reluctant to eat unhealthily too knowing that you've done so well in the morning.Find Out What's HappeningWhether that's a quick BBC news bulletin on TV or seeing how your family in OZ are doing on Facebook, catching up with what you've missed will put you in good stead for the rest of the day. Thanks to Facebook, you'll know when your friends birthdays are, (in case you've forgotten) so keeping on top of things has never been easier.Eat WellVirginia Woolfe once said how "One cannot think well, live well or sleep well, if one has not dined well" and I couldn't agree more. Have a hearty and/or healthy breakfast to start the day right. Find what dish works for you and start doing that more often. And if all else fails, put on a good outfit and fake it 'til you make it. Or at least until you wake up.
How-To: Blog & Work
Working and blogging is a lot harder than it looks. There’s a common misconception that blogging is easy, that anyone can do it and it’s taking a few pretty pictures and writing a couple of paragraphs. Yes anyone CAN do it, but it takes time, a part of your life and your passion. If you aren’t willing to commit that, I’d think twice. Be RealisticOnly you know how much free time you have in your week. You may have your job, fitness regime, hobbies, social events, seeing your friends, family and partner and that’s BEFORE your blog even comes into play. The whole ‘There aren’t enough hours in the day’ saying is so true when you have to squeeze all of that into your life. Your free time is precious so be realistic with what you can achieve. You may be out of the country for two straight weeks so decide what you want to do. Some take a hiatus, some bring in guest bloggers (which is great for building up blogging relationships and for a fresh eye on your content) and some prep that empty gap with scheduled posts. Or you may have plans every night in one week - the same applies.Assess Your Week & PlanThe best way to know what you can achieve is to take each week as it comes. Every Sunday I’ll look at my calendars for the week ahead - firstly work to see what my workload's looking like and what lunch breaks I'll have free and then social to see what nights I can squeeze some things in. And I'll use them to see what blog assets I can achieve. Reviews need well-lit photography so come A/W - they're weekend jobs with the little light we get, whereas if I'm travelling on a train - that gives me an hour or so of solid writing time. Try to fit it in around your life and not the other way around.ScheduleWhether you’re away (literally) or just don’t have that much time that week, scheduling is a great option. From scheduling a post to scheduling tweets and Instagrams, it can take the weight off doing it daily and let you have more of your free time back. I wouldn't recommend forever scheduling as it can take some of the creativity away so find the balance that's right for you. Tweetdeck is always a great shout for Twitter and there's loads of Insta scheduling apps like Later and Unum to help get your grid looking great. Be Ready For InspirationIt can happen at any point so be ready. If you're at a desk for your job, jot down ideas on a pad or make a quick list on Word. Alternatively make notes on your phone or grab a sheet of paper. I try to carry my laptop around with me as much as possible as although I love my phone, I love typing and my ideas seem to just flow better from a keyboard. Fit It In Around Your LifeUltimately, unless your blog is your life and your job, it should compliment and accompany your life. Don’t let it take over or become a chore to do. Enjoy it and weave it in and around your work. Some weeks it will be easier than others to slot the two together and some it won’t. Try your best but don’t beat yourself up about it.
Party Prep: Slicked Back Hair
The Office Party is coming up and what better time to try out the trends you just can’t wear every day. Well maybe you could, but… effort.Usually I’m not one for the beauty regimes, hair styling, or anything much further than the bare minimal to leave the house without looking homeless. Just ask the girls at work. I go for, and I quote “the natural look” (I’m still pretending that wasn’t an insult). But, it’s Christmas… and if you can’t do it at Christmas, when else can you? Yes, I’m quoting Love actually. My most recent beauty crusades (literally, quests that took priority over everything else in my life) included the faux bob and glitter eyes. This year I don’t have time on my side. I’m going straight from work, to getting ready, to the party… and food somewhere in between. So, I’ve decided to go for the simple but effective slicked back hair, as seen on Gigi, Kendall and basically the entire model crew. Here’s how to get the look in 3 simple steps:
